Default To break or not to break...

Need some advice please guys...

Impreza STI Spec D, 2006, 80k miles from new, fsh, 1 prev owner.

Engine has been removed due to suspected head gasket failure. Adding up the list of parts (gaskets, cambelt kit, clutch) I'm wondering whether it would be more cost effective to break the car for parts. Although I've enjoyed having the car I won't be keeping it for more than say another 6 months even if I do repair it (got the itch!). So the questions are:

How much would the car be worth once it's repaired?
How much would the car be worth sold as is (engine out)?
What should I expect to get back if I sell as parts?

I'm thinking at the moment that due to the value of a number of the STI parts (Brembo brakes, 6 speed DCCD gearbox, leather interior, suspension, etc) this might be the way forward, seems awful to break a 2006 car though

Tough one really mate.

I would say repair it personally and as you say, sell in 6 months.

As to what it's worth, as has been found by some members on here, it's more like what are you willing to accept. Being Spec D does have it's benefits for selling as a whole, so it should in theory go for half decent money, it's just a case of keeping a watching brief on the sites and forums in 6 months for a guide.

Worth more in bits . As is about 4.5k to 5k . The one being broken is Damian's . Bought it to break with the engine out with a head gasket gone !

IMO Find out whether its the head gasket or not then go from there. If its just a head gasket, it has to be more cost effective to fix and sell complete.

A Spec D hawk in the current market 8K to sell quickly.

Say £500 just for gasket, labour and new cambelt. that gives you circa 7-7.5K clear.

Doubt you will get that in bits, plus you have the aggravation and labour to break it.

A mate just sold his 2006 '56' STI in crystal grey with a rebuilt engine (nicely rebult - forged etc) and got £8500 from a trader. His was showing 29,000 miles on the original engine.

As Rob already said. I would see what the rebuild is going to cost first. I guess with the rebuild, again, it depends how far you go.

you have to work into the price the time spent breaking!at your hourly earning rate!
same with modding really!you make be surprised how long and just how inconvenient it is to break it to the max earning level ie.every bit!and you will be left with loads!
(got a friend just done this with a 34 gtr)he wished he had never started!

I would stick with the rebuild Andy.
Once the car is running it's sellable.
If you break it you may or may not be lucky to end up with a clear garage.If you factor in the time and effort in breaking, if you say only £500 then you could afford to lose that off the asking price.

Thanks guys for your advice so far.

Any recommendations on where I could just drop the engine off to, let them fit the gaskets/cambelt then I can pick it up and just drop it back in?

Assuming the engine is a 2.5 with AVCS, what price would you let it go for as is?

Or just sell the car as a going concern for a cheap price. Thats the great thing with scoobs there are plently of grease monkeys out there that wil happily take it on, spend there spare time either stripping it or rebuilding it for a profit.

In my own mind I have already decided If my engine ever let go, its more than likely what I would end up doing.

I done this on a Celica GT4 I had once. Bought it with a forged engine, stage 2 mods and lots of goodies for a fraction of its build price as you always do. But then the car started over heating spordically. Tried a few simple things to no avail, so thought head gasket maybe. Put it on market as a going concern on the GT4 forum for 3K and had plenty of folk wanting to take it on. Couple of guys come round armed with tools kits, let them poke and pull the car about and test various things including compression test, and they took a punt with it thinking it was head gasket as I did. It later transpired to be a cracked block, but no hard feeling between buyer and I because the car was worth 3K in bits. They were just hoping for a quick fix and profit, but still done OK.

Has your "mechanic" let you down If we can get it into the back of the connect I will drop it into one of the local specialists, try Rivett Autos, TFS, Greenwoods ect.

The spec d in the link above is the one I'm breaking. I paid £4750 for it with "a noise" coming from the pass side cylinder head, turns out it was a bolt stuck inside the cambelt cover . It should break for £5K excluding the transmission!!! I have been shocked the bits some people want e.g boot lid springs, floor mats and carpet. The front end and brakes have been slower to move and the process does take alot of time. I work 6 days and finding time to break the car is very difficult. Its a big task and many of the bits are quite fiddly to remove and easily broken if you dont know what your doing. Good luck what ever you decide to do, they are a lovely car and so many people tried to convince me not to break it but I need 200mph in my life
