Default Please advise

The other day I pulled over to stop at my folks house and stupidly stalled it in first went to start it up and nothing! I no it's not the fuel pump cause I can hear that! But if I drive it and for an example turn the car off to put petrol in it won't start unless I've jump started or bumped it! I can also leave it for a few hours and it will start! I was wondering if this has happened to a few fellow people?

when you say it wont start, what do you mean? do you turn the key and theres nothing? or does it turn over and if so, slowly, as normal ?

could be a lot of things so any extra info you can give will help narrow things down.
could be battery fluid low, battery on its way out, alternator, starter, dodgey earth lead etc

Usually crank or cam sensor.

Removing and cleaning the crud off them helps or resolves it for a while anx reassures you enough thatsm its the issue and you can buy new ones.

For an example I could drive the car turn it off put key back in everything will prime an make usual noises but nothing no starter motor clicking no noise that would to me mean the battery is fooked just nothing I'll sometimes get the occasional clicking from starter motor but 9/10 nothing when I turn the key it's just nothing what so ever! It's a new engine with new sensors and everything new wiring loom everything was cleaned before putting the engine back in!!

I was just stumped as to starting it in first gear by mistake and nothing after

check the posotive lead to the starter. on my last scoob, it looked fine, but when i removed it and cleaned up the connection, it got rid of my intermittant starting. I think the weather gets at the electrical connection there.
if that dont work, check your earth lead to the block. although my money would be on the positive lead to the starter as above

when it has one of its funny moments an wont start what voltage are you getting from the battery? an does it drop when starter engauged? (i no the starter doesnt do anything but does it pull the voltage down)

(it knows you want to sell it)

I had same problem it turned out to be the starter's heat shield. When cold would start no bother, once warm/hot no chance. New starter sorted it.

Well I've just driven 150 miles in it to Portsmouth and no problems what so ever just went to check in and had to move the car and nothing!! I don't wanna buy a starter motor just incase it's not that!! Do you think it could ne something to do with the alternator? I sprayed one matt black and wondered If that could be an issue? I don't think it is tho because I'm still getting the battery light come on the second click of the ignition!!

Also I've noticed when I indicate left or right the revs shoot up and down on the rev counter without it over or under revving?

you need to check what voltage the battery is holding and you need to check voltage when engine running.

I agree with what everyone else is aayig abouttje starter motor. In the past let's just say I've had some unsavoury cars (mk3-4 escorts) and I had the starters go on me. On way I used to check if te starter was sticking was by giving the starter its self a tap. Seems like a quick way to eliminate sticky starter. Hope you get it's sorted cheaply ad quickly tho mate.

I would buy a starter motor but I'm in Portsmouth with the car it's strange that it won't start after it's hot but like Nige said and you mostly everyone else looks like I'm gonna have to try and find somewhere down here if not I'll have to get someone to jump start it every morning lol

if its makin your engine rev indicator go up n down when you put indicator on, but not your actual revs then its probably bad earth lead or a screwed battery.
Get a jump lead on the negative battery terminal and put the other end on the engine block next time it dont wanna start. If it starts, then you got a bad earth lead somewhere. If its the battery, then usualy you will here the solenoid repeatedly clicking so i doubt it.

So basicLly put the black jump lead on my neg connection and the other end on the block with out anyone else's battery involved? Just so I understand sorry if I seem a bit thick!

I finally had a fault code come up number 12 which google tells me starter switch!! So would that be a new starter motor all together in other words?
