Default Newbie question?!

Hi guy's

You probably get asked this a lot....

Whats with all the vulcan's?

Did someone eat a book on the falklands and decide the 607 is fantastic?

Andy

Thumbs up

As Sqn Ldr of the 555, I may be able to answer this.

'Vulacn to the Sky' is an organisation setup to support the restoration and running of the last remaining Vulcans.

The Wgn Sqn (formerly known as East Sussex Scoobies 555 Wagon Squadron) has unofficially adopted the Vulcan (or Vulcans) as a cause worth supporting, so that’s why you’re seeing references to the Vulcan dotted around this site.

Off the record...

The boys at Wgn Sqn MI555 (they’re a spiffing bunch of lads) have inside information regarding the Vulcans... and the rumour doing the rounds in the mess at the moment is... F.Off Krud or Subarman know more!

Over to you... over under... and out

The Vulcan's are legendary bombers. so i guess it's a cool subject to have as unofficial club emblem.

I have read Vulcan 607 which is the only one i've read about.

But after looking on the net i see there's only one left thats working? well i saw this article..
Restoration to flight of Vulcan XH558

XH558 performs its first post-restoration public display on 5 July 2008

Main article: Avro Vulcan XH558
The last airworthy Vulcan (XH558) has been restored to flying condition by the "Vulcan to the Sky Trust" after years of effort and fundraising. The first post-restoration flight, which lasted 34 minutes, took place on 18 October 2007. [44][45]
The aircraft now needs an urgent injection of funding by the end of February 2010, as maintenance work due in 2011 has had to be brought forward.

It'll be a shame if it cannot be restored! England is losing all it's good things... I guess the lottery would rather fund a few new youth hostel's instead?

Hello Wiggy

Firstly the Vulcan is not a club emblem, although I can see why you might think it was. The 555 Wagon Squadron have their own special badge which you will see dotted about on both cars and clothing in the Wagon Squadron Area 51 on this forum.

The way it started for me was, that Subaru provided Tribecas and Legacys to the Vulcan to the Sky Trust back in 2008 as support vehicles. They took some publicity shots with their Subarus and the Vulcan, and I thought, would it not be good to park the Wagon Squadron up in front of such a mighty bomber and grab some photos.

Unfortunately access to XH558 was not possible, so I started looking around for other preserved Vulcans where we might have a better chance of linking cars with bomber for a photo shoot.

The result was that the Squadron were able to visit Vulcan XL426 at Southend Airport (there is a thread in Area 51). This was a success, and having proved that we could behave, we can visit again. Also on the cards is a visit to XM655 in the Summer (separate thread in the events section). Neither of these can take off, although they can taxi when serviceable to do so.

Vulcan XH558 has been restored to flying condition (cost around £7 million), and was airborne for both the 2008 and 2009 airshow seasons. However, it flew last year by the skin of it's teeth (costs over £1.6 million per year), and at the moment it looks like it will be grounded for 2010 due to lack of funds, and the support staff will be made redundant.

I have got heavily involved in the Vulcan charity because the efforts of a small team to battle the odds and get a complex nuclear bomber that is 50 years old back in the sky, when everybody said it could not be done, seemed worthy of admiration, and seemed tremendously "british".

Hence I am publicising the dire plight facing this wonderful aeroplane. There are plenty of vids on Youtube to whet your appetite.

Glad you are interested.

Keith

I've looked at some squadron threads... I like the squadron logo..

I reckon a camo paint job would look pretty awsome?I have seen a vw camper with tons of large camo stickers at a show once i wonder if anyone would dare de-face their wagon with it?

Also when you visit the air base's do they let you guy's have a speed run up and down? ?

Camo paint would be great - the Squadron Leader has a green wagon, so he is half way there.

It is an awesome site and we have videos of it at fairford last year, if anyone is interested I will post them up again

Is the XH558 still based at Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire if so this is accessible and I may know someone who might have access, so I will ask the question later

No Baz, it's at RAF Brize Norton for the winter, which of course is an operational RAF base. If it doesn't fly again, I'm not sure where it will end up......
