front wheel bearing
ive got an mot coming in a few months and am aware of a noise on full lock going anticlockwise that I believe is the drivers side front wheel bearing showing early signs of tiredness - high pitched squeal
are these hard to change and is it better to go for whole hub or just do the bearing ? ive come from landrover ownership where a wheel bearing meant a whole hub at £300 or £180 for pattern part so would be nice just to be able to do a bearing if that's all it needs wish there was a Haynes manual for these tbh just to give noobs like me some clue |

Just do the bearing, although you'll need a press to do it so a garage job. If you get a second hand hub, it might already have a tired bearing in it....

What age car do you have? Earlier cars require pressing the bearing out of the hub, the latter (114pcd) cars have a bolt in hub assembly only (140 odd quid)
I did the latter at the weekend, it did not take too long. If attempting yourself then make sure you have a good long knuckle bar preferably with a scaffold bar on the end of it for extra leverage to free the drive shaft nut off! they are VERY tight!

Yes PCD100 then.
A big hammer and something large and round normally does the trick with it resting on something like a vice or such like. although a press does make easier work of it

Yes, they can be done without a press (one of mine was) but it took a sledgehammer and a lot of effort! Thought the hub was going to break first!
I personally wouldn't try and do it again that way! |
