If you know a friendly MOT tester - then Decat - if not - then sports cat...

A decatted car cannot pass a roadside test or MOT therefore is effectively illegal and could invalidate insurance etc. A good sports cat will see you well over 400bhp, mine is at 450 and passes MOT and roadside emissions tests.

I was going to go full decat but then i got stopped at a VOSA/police checkpoint completely randomly. Luckily only had cat back system in. They checked loads of things. Tyres, exhaust, my licence, insurance. This was just on the A24 a few weeks ago.
Chances of getting stopped are very slim....... BUT......... makes you think! Worst case scenario you get stopped and you have a decat on thats going to fail, voiding the MOT, Voiding your insurance. The police let the insurer know, they cancel your policy, you then need to tell your next insurance provider you had a policy cancelled. It wont look good. Plus the fine and drama of it all. Not 100% sure on the gain difference i think its like 3bhp and a tiny amount or torque.
I am going sports cat, that will pass fine.

perhaps I should clarify - I also went sports cat as didn't want to be illegal - but know others who are fully decat e.t.c.

You can fail MOT if cats are missing on a visual inspection now as well I believe.

I went decat on the hawk and while the car was transformed it did have its down sides.

1. Faffing around at MOT time
2. Possibility that it could void MOT/Insurance. Mine was declared but all it stated on the insurance papers was 'exhaust modifications'. A grey area.
3. Noise. Sounded great on a sunday morning going to a meet. Got annoying every other day (I must be getting old)
4. The Smell. Definitely smellier inside the car and out.

If I were doing it again I would go sports cat. You may loose a little power or particularly torque but probably not noticeable and avoid all of the above.

I should add my car was a daily and used for work. I guess if it was a second car and garaged I may have looked at it a bit differently.

My Impreza has the Miltek Sports Cat 3' system with the Sports Cat in the mid section, I have also removed the Up-Pipe Cat as the car is now effectively an STI which never had them anyway.
