Brads explanation while correct is fairly simplistic.............our "manual boost controller" is the same basic operation as a 'Dawes device' however just like everyone calling vaccum cleaners a "hoover" its a specific companies offering rather than the generic device available which is very basically a one-way valve with a pre-loaded spring that opens at the pressure its set to and is a totally closed system.......
a Bleed valve works differently in that you 'bleed' air off the system to fool the actuator into staying shut longer this invariably involves over-boosting the turbo to achieve what your after so its for this reason that it can cause damage
