Just a thought, if you are using the stretchy boot, do you need to pop the shaft out of the diff or can you not put it on from the hub end. Don't know if you've got room to get the clip round the CV joint with it in place. Would also save having to drain the oil from the diff.

Good to hear this mate. Not got a cone, but plenty of choice on Fleebay that offer the cone, and gaitor kit for about £12 all up. I was thinking along the lines you were and stretching it right over from hub end, and can't see that wont work, other than possibly getting tangled up on the outer gator.
Also thought about just cracking ball joint joint, leaving the hub end in place and removing the diff end. Haven't read anywhere about oil coming out the diff so assume there is an oil seal that end to prevent it pissing out.
Will order the part today and will have a go at weekend. I ran out of time at the weekend doing various other jobs and was just going to pay someone, but no local garage I trust can get to it this week. So looks like another day will be spent this weekend mucking about on the car
