Well managed to get the 160GB HD out of the Xbox and into a caddy.
Had a few issues along the way, like the Xbox HD was locked to the Xbox so the PC would not recognise it as a drive.

Luckily the bin men don't come till today so recovered the Xbox from the bin and plugged it back in.
There happened to be a utility on the disk that allowed you to unlock the drive password (after navigating through many warnings screens), so done that and put back in PC External HD Caddy.

Still not recognised, but after a bit of a search/google and reading alot of contradicting threads, found one guy that said to right click 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'.

This then showed an additional drive as 'un-initialized'.
Set this to 'initialize' and then was able to partion/format.

Took a while as 160GB, but got there in the end and have now copied my entire music MP3 collection onto it and still have 110GB to spare.......

so there's a Top tip for anyone with an old original Xbox...to make use of the HD.
