Advice Please...
Really really stuck.
Some of you may know I am getting a 2006 WRX STI imported from Japan, not long now, it's due to be with me by this time next month.
I'm having it remapped to run safely on UK fuel but have been advised to get a few bits to insure it is health. The parts I have got are the following:
- K&N Panel Filter
- PFR7B Plugs
- Aeromotive Fuel Pump
- 3 Port Solenoid
- Cambelt Kit & Waterpump
- Mud Flaps (I bought these as where I go quite often is rather muddy/dusty).
To fit all these (just labour) and a remap I have been quoted £765, because it's 2 hours away and he'd need it for 2 days we would have to stay in a hotel.
This is where I'm stuck. I'm not a qualified mechanic but I have been working on cars since I was young. My dad is a retired qualified mechanic and has offered to help, together we have done engine rebuilds, cambelts (even a cambelt on a classic subaru) etc. (these have all been on our own cars over the years). We have the space and a lot of tools (compressors etc.).
If we did the work ourselves I'd still need to get the remap done which is £350, that would be a massive saving of £475 (that's including £60 for a hotel).
I'm worried as it's the most expensive car I've ever owned and having waited so long for it I don't want anything to go wrong while I do it. What would you all do if you had the choice? Sorry for the essay.
