It was once explained to me thus; your backbox gives you the exhaust note and will allow for some additional db by removing some muffling, the rest of the system. e.g. centre pipe gives you volume.
If you take out the resonator in the centre pipe it should increase the volume I believe.
I still have all cats and a resonator, so cannot confirm that what I was told was right. However, my friend had the same car as me, but a straight through centre pipe and his is louder, so seems the logic follows.
