As per previous thread I headed to The Somme battlefields at the weekend.
Awesome trip...packed a lot in and would recommend doing it to anyone if not been before
stayed in a great self catering place in Hardecourt aux bois
http://www.chavasseferme.com/
loads of stuff at the accommodation that other guests have found
lochnagar crater.....amazing
German cemetery where the Red Baron (not our one on ses) was buried before his family moved him. very differently maintained compared with commonwealth graves
delville woods......most moving place on the trip. Imagine this with all the trees as stumps and a wasteland in 1916
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Delville_Wood
Thiepval memorial...about as large as Arc de triumph and seen from miles all around this area
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiepval_Memorial
found a family member....need to find out more as this one I didnt know about and died here
Beaumont-hamel.....amazing place. So many died here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaumon...dland_Memorial
memorial at same place for the Canadians that died here
petrified tree from 1916 here
the memorial in the distance on this one was basically where the German line was in a deep ridge out of sight....shows how close they were to each other
I've got a couple more somewhere.
The anniversary of the Somme outbreak in July 2016 will be a very busy time for visiting. The accommodation I stayed at has been booked for 7 years already!!
