I have an '06 WRX with the 2.5l engine in and I'd agree with Lucky that the 2.0l engines are probably stronger. The 2.5l engine is great for bags of torque once it's remapped, mine was running 330 lbft with just 280bhp, BUT......

There is a very common problem with the oil pickup - it is prone to fracturing, causing bottom end failure (spun crank shaft, etc) The only way to detect it is to look at the oil pressure @ idle... Mine nearly failed and I only knew because I'd fitted a gauge. even then it spun the bearing on No 3...

Second issue is that the 2.5 is prone to ringland failure, which has also just happened to mine!
2 broken pistons, ruined inlet valves, spun crankshaft bearing, etc etc Now having a rebuild, and wishing I'd bought a 2l car!..

But then again you may never have any problems, and other than that, it's all good...

HTH.
