The belt you probably saw would of been the aux belt(s) and not the cambelt. Just because the aux belt is in bad condition doesnt always mean the cambelt will be the same, a lot of people just change cambelt without anything else. Usually you should change a cambelt kit either every 5 years or 60k miles whichever comes first. Aux belt is cheap and easy to do.

All it all sounds like you made the right choice.

It must be my hoarder qualities as I keep every bill and receipt! is this unusual as most cars I've bought hae had a stack of bills and invoices with them.?

The belt (if it helps in identifying it )was at the top left highest point if standing in front of the engine bay looking straight on.
