Power to Weight Ratio

As I am considering an STi Hawkeye 2.5 next year I thought I would look into the differences in Power to Weight Ratio between the Hawkeye and the Classic to establish what I need to do, to the Hawk to get the Power to Weight on par with my classic.

I was shocked at the results.

My Classic is currenty 335BHP, this roughly works out to be a Power-To-Weight Ratio of 270BHP/Tonne.

So if I want to ensure the Hawkeye achieves a similar 270BHP/Tonne what am I looking at as a total Power Figure ????

Well
.
.
.
Classic Weight : 1235kg
Total Power 333bhp
Equals 270BHP/Per Tonne

Hawkeye : 1495kg
With an equal 270BHP/Per Tonne
Requires a Total Power of 403bhp !!!!!!

And for a laugh and our good friend Nige i thought I would compare the EVO 8 too :

EVO 8 1410kg
With an equal 270BHP/Per Tonne
Requires a Total Power of 380bhp

I always assumed that a Newage/Bug/Blob/Hawk would have to be around 370BHP to compare to a Classic of 330BHP. But the maths and the 260Kg (2 large men in the boot) would seem to indicate that a fair bit more is required.

Hmm.....maybe a re-think of my plan is required.

A 2.5 in your classic!! you know it makes sense scott!

Chunk 16-12-2010 08:43 AM

Just out of interest and to make my car a laughing stock, could you work out what mine is please

Weight = 1890kg
Power = 308bhp

Thanks

Oh yeah, as Tone said, 2.5 your classic

Claire_PPP 16-12-2010 09:15 AM

Could you not just ask the two large men in the boot of the Hawkeye to get out? :getmecoat:

SUBARMAN 16-12-2010 09:22 AM

WOW! Keep the classic Scott!!!!

:SMBLU:

XRS 16-12-2010 09:33 AM

The thing is, even if you do get the Hawkeye up to 403 bhp, the classis will still "feel" faster.
My old STi IV felt faster than the T25 through the gears, partly because the sensation of speed is less in the new car - not good for the driving licence!

Scooby Roo 16-12-2010 09:41 AM

Sniff my new STi = 195 bhp/tonne :(

Opens wallet and moths flutter off :(

Have to wait for mods....:)

scooby doo 16-12-2010 09:44 AM

Scott is there any difference in weight from the uk sti to the jdm version?

or spec c version l:ok:

i really love the look of the hawk,

plus its alot newer car, and handling is surpose to be great

Hongkongfooi 16-12-2010 10:19 AM

are you getting rid of the classic scott or keeping as well?

if the latter you can compare the two!

Coming from a stripped RA to a heavy newage, on the strip i prefered the RA but on track the newage and i had every whiteline mod on the RA to just coilovers on the Newage

Nige 16-12-2010 01:14 PM

I told you i had to thrash my sti to stay with you. If i had the extra cash mate that classic of yours would be mine its a proper mint genuine car. You could go 2.5 Scott or is it a complete change of car your after? Think hard mate £6500 is not big money for YOUR car. :drive:

Anger 16-12-2010 03:50 PM

350bhp 22b V's 427bhp Newage.... I was gone on a rolling start

scoobycoops 16-12-2010 07:31 PM

Classics roooock. Have you thought of stripping the weight a bit, stereo, spare wheel, bulkhead foam... Back seats, jack, the other fat bloke : (260kg / 2 = 130 = 20 stone?!!! How about some salads!) I can't talk!! ..
2.5 the classic until the recession is over....

scoobycoops 16-12-2010 07:32 PM

Thanks for the info though. Classics go round corner good too

Lucky 17-12-2010 01:09 PM

May or may not help scott but you are welcome to have a good go in mine anytime you like. I know its only 340 ish itself so may feel heavy compared with yours but I do think you will enjoy the torque!. I think a hawk with 400/400 would be awesome.

RobEvo5 17-12-2010 02:29 PM

Stick with your classic mate, as Nige sais its proper mint and genuine. As much as its worth it, I doubt you will get what it deserves when or if you do go to sell it.

That said, the whole experience in a Hawk is going to generally be nicer and more grown up and the extra torque will make it feel quicker, so if you could get top money for yours it a good step up for little money... However its still just another scooby.

I'd take lucky up on his offer. I reckon you would be smitten with the whole package. Stop looking at figures and go test drive some cars including the other marques you mentioned to me ;), unless your doing track work, quarter miles or have your right foot constantly on the carpet on public roads, paper BHP means nothing.

= 163 BHP/tonne. ;)

Scott.. your classic will weigh more than 1235 inho.

the other issue.. the newage and hawk are more refined and soundproofed so you need another 50bhp to come over that :)

Jolly Green Monster 18-12-2010 07:10 PM

in back of evo mag its 1235 and 1470/1495 for newage

Jolly Green Monster 18-12-2010 08:23 PM

yes the book weights.. but I don't agree with them.

but my classic stripped like crazy with addition of a cage was 1216kgs.

I had removed the door cards, the rear seat, the seat belts, removed the heavy standard seats and fitted light buckets, all sound proofing, roof lining, boot liners, spare wheel, etc.. and the cage added 35kg.. I estimate I had removed around 150kgs..

not that it really matters and I didn't mean to be picky.

just been doing some maths..

bugatti veyron 1888kg 987bhp = 522bhp/tonne
Peppermint Subaru 1216kgs 665bhp = 546bhp/tonne
However I believe they do a special edition veyron with 1183bhp.. = 626bhp/tonne, damn.. I have some work to do ;)

been trying, it is far cheaper to remove the weight from the car than it is increase the power :)

Just want that same point and squirt feel for zipping past rows of cars on the a21. Similar feeling to having a bike but safety of 4 wheels.

fairly individual judgement on that feeling.. the torque of the 2.5 will help, the slightly better build quality and togetherness of the car wont but is much nicer in everyday use..
Also the head lights actually light the road up ;)

you driven one?

Back in 2006 demo car so a while ago. Did feel slow but was stock power.

You cant quite get that point squirt feeling like a bike unless you have a Veyron or similar. PTW my GSXR1000k6 with some work done 160kg & 171bhp atw not sure what that is at the fly. Never been on or in anything like it

The difference after simon sorted it was incredible. Third feels like second used to, and forth, third etc... With the torque the power is always there which is nice, whereas before you could get caught out. As I said Scott, more than happy for you to borrow it for a while at some point. The other problem with the stock cars is that they are sooooooo quiet its like driving an electric car!!!. Even just changing the centre and rear exhaust section made it 'feel' faster, although obviously didnt make much if any 'actual' difference.

I have stopped racing bikes, too many bikers get annoyed when you keep up or are quickers and then do suicidal moves to get past.
I decided if they crash and die I would be in big trouble.
You need to include rider / driver into the equation if comparing car to bike as scott isnt looking to buy s bike so cant just compare without.

There is a nice Hawk on lanceregister at the moment just 11.5K, good mileage right colour and wheels.

Business was good for us this year, and If I can make a concious effort to stop being so prudent, I might be thinking along the same lines in the new year myself. But its 2nd on the list to a 335d/i.

Managed to sit on the chuff of a Gixer600 no trouble.

It's that feeling you get when you over take 1....2....3...oh sod it while I'm out here might as well do all 5. Then jumping on the brakes to pull the speed back down or end up in the back of the car/truck that was prviously 1 mile ahead kinda thing........

Rather then (on the A21) being stuck behind everything South of Tunbridge Wells.
