Slight gearbox whine in 4th and 5th on overrun.

Got a slight whine when you back of the gas in 4th and 5th. Mileage is 120K so gearbox is probably a little tired. But could it just be a little low on oil, and a top might help ?. or replacing with another 'thicker' oil to help dampen down the noise.. If so any recomendations on oil to use for a high miler. ?.

My RA use to wine when i really went for it on track... i changed to REDLINE shockproof and it never did again even surviving 40 odd full drag launches at over 400BHP

Castrol syntax which I think is now called driveline. The nut on the back end of the geardset can come loose cause wine and can also cause it to jump out of gear.

Could be a worn synco. But from my experience short shifts can make engaging gears more difficult. Could be worth trying it without the the short shift first.

In my case the whine is more pronounced once the gear oil is warm and can't really hear anything when the car is cold. So definately think some good quality gear oil could be just the ticket. Shame is about £10-£15 per litre and need 4 litres of it..

old oil will defiantely make it more pronounced.........min 2-3yrs for changing it

D/line is reasonable but personally use/supply the Millers CRX synth race oil...........
(although we also stock Castrol and Motul variants)
