Not a fan of them myself but have driven a fair few, they dont hang about and i should think that both cars in standard form would be very close!!!

blimey an almost even handed debate with little flammage on SN - whats the world comming to.

worzel 17-05-2010 02:12 PM

It's unbelievable isn't it.

I know for sure that the VXR shifts though. I test drove a Vectra VXR just before I got the M3 and it was stonking. In hindsight I made the wrong choice.

I have been warmly welcomed over there after posting up too, so happy days and all that

Haven't read the threads, but with a degree of certainly I can imagine a VXR is a quick car. Our Zafira GSI now has 235bhp and although soft as marshmellows in the corners it is a very quick car in a straight line and standard STI power.

And the Saab I have for sale has a conservative 250bhp and I would say is quicker than a 300bhp scoob. There are other plenty of other motors out there now, to give most scoobs a run for their money or possibly beat them.

Thankfully my 445bhp scoob should brush of most things other than true super cars and motorbikes.:D

worzel 17-05-2010 02:33 PM

Rob, I couldn't agree more about the standard scooby. It's just not the all conquering beast it was 10 years ago or so. There are so many cars out there now that are lightning quick. The VXR's / Megane Sports and the like give you massive bangs for bucks and when you comapre the BHP per ton figures, that's where we probably fall down a bit.

Don't get me wrong, there are a few cars on here that could go up against just about anything and be at worst a match for it, in most cases kicking the butt of.

But in standard form the scooby just isn't the monster it once was.

Please don't think that I am slagging of scoobs though, cos I love them in pretty much all forms / marques. And I always will do.

RobEvo5 17-05-2010 03:33 PM

I never understimate other marques on the road, some of the Seat guys are running very, very quick cars as well. The one thing Scoob has that top trumps most of them though, is the AWD. It Makes for a much more useable car.

Quote from the thread on VXR:

"But along came an absolute bargain of a 3 year old M3 at a really ridiculous price that I couldn't ignore. I loved it for a year but have got bored with it now."

Seems you got to where I was with my M3, but it only it took me a few weeks to get to the same conclusion. :D M3's are great cars and do everything very well. 'Boring' although a strong word for it, is where I got to with it.

Interestingly the Guy I bought the STI from had also had an E46 M3 prior to the STI, that only lasted 3 weeks for him because it just didn't excite him enough.

Its a scratch I am glad I itched, but I have no regrets moving on.!

worzel 17-05-2010 03:45 PM

Very true about the Seats for sure.

I am honestly bored with the M3. I drove it to Lancashire this weekend, 290 miles each way plus a bit of driving when I was up there. And though it ate the miles up and it was all nice and comfortable, ther was absolutely no spark to it, I never actually enjoyed the drive. If it was the scoob I would have enjoyed it big time.

I will endeavour to get it moved on at some point this year (much to the disgust of my wife I'm sure) and get something a little more exciting to drive but that could still be an everyday car.

If I can pick up a goodish one, I think it may well be the car I have wanted for some time now, a Monaro :norty:

When i had the TD05 20g first put on my Scoob When it was a 2litre. There was a meet at Beachy head & Adams VXR with 270bhp kept up with the Scoob. Well untill we came to some twisty bits then he nearly died. So they are fast. :drive:

worzel 18-05-2010 12:00 AM

They are that mate. The Nurburgring Astra VXR is a proper missile. It's all down to the good old BHP per Ton issue really

Rich, it would be the VXR8 For sure, just using the generic name, being an old man and all that :oldman: I will come and see you without doubt mate.

Nige 18-05-2010 03:24 AM

Same as :oldman: like Granby i would take that devil vauxhall badge off. Then give it it's real name I STEER FROM THE REAR :drive:

Definately fantastic cars, but they do it too well if you know what I mean. There is no Rawness to them. The scoob is a step backwards in some respect, but a step forward in terms of smiles and driver involvement/fun factor.

I have and always will have the utmost respect for a M3 if I am ever pitched against one, and may get another one, one day, but it will be a Cab and SMGII version.

Funny, I don't think anybody has mentioned the VX220. Now they are rapid!!

A mate of mine had one and being 6ft4 I couldn't get in the bloody thing, even when he took the roof off!

worzel 18-05-2010 01:55 PM

You are right :agreed: I had forgotten about that little rocket. They are tidy bits of kit for sure.

:drive:

Suprise, suprise have owned a VX220 turbo stage1 :D. Still the most fun on 4 wheels I have ever had and likely to have. Superb cars. Sold mine a few years back for 13.5K, and would probably be worth more than that today. Was one of the those cars I should have kept.:(

Anything would feel quick with your arse so close to the floor, bloody horrible things in my opinion!!!

Lucky 19-05-2010 03:35 PM

VXR8 has to be a good choice steve. There is a black one around our way that I guess has been tweaked as it almost breaks any nearby glass with the noise it makes. I know what you mean with the M3/Scoob. The M3 is by far the 'better' car, but as we said before, there are very few cars that make you smile like a scoob/evo, especially for the money. I thinks its alot to do with the harsh ride, rattles and stupid amounts of punch in the back syndrome . I drove a new R32 golf for a while and got bored with that for the same reason. At the end of the year I will be in the market for something to use for 'work'. Budget aint what it was - lol, so M3's etc are out as it will be a leased new car. I am still very tempted with an RS focus, especially after seeing a couple at the weekend at dunsfold. They are so well turned out and meran looking. Luckly tho, I will still have the scoob for frightening myself every now and again

Not even sure i would want one on the track, anything over 100mph and you might aswell not have a steering wheel in front of you as the steering goes very very light (scary) :-o

When I had my 04 Wagon with a few mods I got 270/250 on the RR. It was quick enough for me, but most of the power was up at high revs as there was no re-map.

I went up against a Corsa VXR once and got right royally spanked. He couldn't get away from me up at speed, but at the next roundabout on pull away he just disappeared. It could of been modded I guess, but what a little rocket. I would love one.

Now I own a classic again with 215/215 its like lighting...... well after driving my 75bhp Derv Corsa all week that is ;)
