looking at laptops

I'm looking at getting my daughter a laptop for her 10th birthday .
Looking at spending no more than £300 , anybody make suggestion or work in the industry that can get us a good buy ?
Will be for her to do her school work on and i'm not knowing what to look for !

I'm looking at a laptop right now ;)

Toshiba L300 that I use is pretty bombproof, its survived a few pulls on the cord and onto the floor, but its 2 years old now, not sure what their latest offering is but mine cost £280

Probably get more memory for your money with a netbook i should think.

Although i no expert in pc's

Mine just save there stuff onto a memory stick then they can put it onto any pc!!!

These may give you an idea.... after a (very) quick search these are the best (imo) for that sort of price.

If you want brand new then I would look at this sort of spec.

If second hand you can probably get a better laptop but then no warranty.

Chris
it really depends on what is important, speed of processing, graphics capability, storage etc
Also it would make sense to get a stable operating system like XP.
Things to think about, do you need wireless,bluetooth,cd/dvd writter
you really need to get an idea on what it will be used for and then look online for reviews.
Processor speed is one main thing that costs,Dual core is the way to go, but not sure you will for £300, you will find that £350 gets you a far better lap top than £300, i found that out when Niki got hers.

It's worth looking at Advent while you are doing it.

They give you a lot for your money.

Yep agree

Laptops are about 1 billion times cheaper than they were a few years ago, main things to look out for

1.Core, as Crowman said, get a minimum of a dual core, although i dint think many places sell single cores now anyway. And if you can get a Quad Core.

3.Memory, if its going to come with XP, you max is 3 Gig, dont let anyone try and sell you otherwise, as Xp is capped at 3Gig, even if you have 4 installed. If it comes with Windows7, depending on what version, memory is almost unlimited.

3.HD Space, hard drives are cheap as chips now, bigger the better.

4.Connectivity, wireless, Bluetooth ( not so much BT )

5.Blueray drive..then if you dont have a player, you can HD connect it to a TV :-D

If you say she is going to use it for school ten also Bear in mind that it will not come with any word software for her to do home work you will need to ask for if you buy new Microsoft office for home and students it cost about £70 to £80 pounds she will need it .

We are actually moving to net books in school now - better battery life and smaller/more portable. Most are more than capable of running Office 2007, Windows 7 is not really necessary yet as education will unlikely be moving to it for at least 2 years. the only down side of a netbook is reduced HD size and small screen.
