Decent Oil

What is everyones opinion on best oil money can buy???

I was using 0w 40 Mobile 1.... Is that stuff any good?

Spooky 25-02-2010 04:16 PM

big of an abiguous question is that!

Depends on temps and usage etc...

:agreed::agreed::agreed:

It's one of those never ending questions.

So many theories, so many grades, fully synthetics, semi synthetics etc. The debate will roll on and on for ever.

For what it's worth, Bob Rawle recommends with Forged pistons to go 10w60 Fully Synthetic. I have had this in my scoob and found it a little too thin on the noise front, with excessive piston noise. It isn't doing any harm and my pressures and temps are fine, but I am going to change for something like a 20w50 (as recommended by Simon JGM) and see how that goes.

I'm sure you'll get some good recommendations in this thread, in the end if something seems to get "more votes" than others, then you won't be far wrong I'm sure.

Good luck fella!

10w-60w full synth of a good manf will be good

Tyler 25-02-2010 04:40 PM

Cheers guy's, i am just wondering if it is the oil that i used which gave me the big end bearing problem as i used Mobile 1 0w 40...

worzel 25-02-2010 04:42 PM

Just out of Interest Chris, what make would you class as good manufacture.

Something like Motil?

C. J. 25-02-2010 04:45 PM

Motul , Mobil 1 , Castrol or Millers

worzel 25-02-2010 04:50 PM

Cheers Chris. I have always liked Mobil 1, so will be more than happy to stick down that route.

It's always worth asking someone with their finger on the pulse though

Quite probable as 0W40 as is too thin.

5W40 is about as thin as you want to go.

10W40 or 15W40 is middle ground and your best bet.

Subaru use Catrol Magnetec, I've always used 5W40 to 15W40 Semi Synth from various Manufacturers (Castrol, Halfords, Mobil, 'local motor factor sub £20 stuff, whichevers cheapest or whicher motor factor I'm passing).
Been doing this for 7 years in this current car and 2 years in the previous.
Changed approx every 3-4000 miles or 6-8 month (whichevers sooner) with either a Champion or ADL Blueprint Filter

DukeBoy 25-02-2010 06:32 PM

I use Millers CFS 10w60

Chunk 26-02-2010 09:09 AM

I used to use Mobil1 with the F1 on the front, cant remember the grade

How do you find the piston noise?

No probs at all, but i'm only on standard internals still.

That'll be why then.

I have plumped for Mobil 1, 15w50 fully synthetic. That should be just about right for me I think.

midlife2 26-02-2010 03:51 PM

As you are rebuilding your engine with a fresh rebore etc you should run it in with mineral oil for a few thousand miles before you use a Fully Synthetic oil to let it all bed in
