OBD Reader vs Gauge Pod
 

Toying with the idea of using one of these as an alternative to a set of gauges and pulling the interior apart to fit them... As well as the added benefit of being able to read & clear fault codes, anyone ever used one?

I occasionally use the free version of Torque (on Android), just to read codes and clear them if necessary. I used to use it as a set of gauges but don't really bother nowadays.

If you have an old tablet and mount it somewhere, or have a head unit with Android Auto (or whatever the Apple equivalent is), it would be interesting to use as virtual gauges.

I have both, good quality gauges like defi for example are a lot faster than a good quality odb connector but the odb is very handy for checking various stuff/resetting codes on your phone and using for video overlay etc.

I have defi gauges + BT1 Blu tooth connector, dash command etc etc.. the later is no where near as fast as a Tatrix cable either (though fixing a laptop to the dash wouldn’t be very practical :D)

Oh yes, that's a good point. Bluetooth or Wifi ODB inputs can be picked up by laptimer apps like RaceChrono and let you put extra data on top of video footage.

Too much lag on some OBD Bluetooth or WiFi dongles to use on a daily basis.
OK for checklng codes and checking peak limits but if your looking for a response curve then they are not really up to it.

Android Auto in my RS with OBD blutetooth via phone just adds additional lag, but not surprising really when you consider the interfaces it has to pass through to get to the car's in built display.

You can't beat a set of Defi's or a set of much cheaper stepper/electronic gauges.
