What model of car do you have as I believe they were only fitted on 2001+ wrx's not sure until what date?
But basically it was a pre-turbo cat fitted in the up-pipe not only do they vastly affect the spool of the turbo (lag) but if they fail (not uncommon) they destroy the turbo. Fitting a de-cat is fairly simple but fiddly you will need new turbo studs and a couple of gaskets as a minimum. Do not go for too large a bore pipe as this will reduce exhaust has velocity and again increase the spool time of the turbo, the best option is a Harvey up-pipe from AS Performance matched to your turbo. |
Mine is a 2001, at the mo I have still got the standard turbo but will be upgrading soon. I have been told to use an Sti one and to dodge the eBay specials
|
Guess it's a WRX then? Same car as mine (not much left now though!), used STI is a safe bet, what are your turbo plans?
|
Sorry yer it is a Wrx. So I'm still bein thick here but is the Sti up pipe a decat? And well I'm only lookin at gettin up to the 300bhp mark anythin more is a bonus , so would I b correct in sayin vf34/35 or a td05-16g.
|
The catted uppipes were only in the bugeye wrx and earlier blob wrx (pre-2005 rings a bell). STI's always had a decat uppipe. With your current turbo you can get up to about 280-285bhp with decat uppipe, decent panel filter, decat downpipe/centre pipe and a map.
To go further than that the easiest route is VF35 and pink injectors from newage STI. Once mapped (assuming full decat etc) you would see ~330bhp. Worth changing the fuel pump to a walbro 255 whatever way you go, if your car is still on the original. :) |
Cheers Steve yer I have a full 3 inch decat system on with the 255 fuel pump aem air filter. Ahhhh ryt that makes sense now been told steer clear of the cheap eBay crap. Sweet u guys r legends looks like I will b lookin out for the vf35 and some pinks and Sti up pipe
|
or if you want to do the job "properly" then we supply the Harvey Smith 'trick' up-pipes which maximise the potential of the turbo
fuel pumps, etc. all also stocked |

I base that on just having a decat put on Mrs Stig's 2005 PPP wagon to mitigate the risk of the cat breaking up and ruining the freshly rebuilt turbo. As it was all apart and one of the studs/bolts was a blighter and snapped it seemed a bit of an obvious step to take... trouble is, now it spools fractionally quicker it feels a bit nippier than the Forester! :o |
Looks like I will have to get hold of you guys at ASproformance
