Tyre Recommendations (Not Scoob)

Ok Chaps, another tyre question.

After an argument with a pot hole I need to put at least a pair of tyres on the Civic. I'm asking a lot and I know it will be a compromise but they need to be able to cope with all weathers and used daily on a 100 mile round trip from Hastings to Crawley and back. I go across country on a mixture of A and B roads, a lot of which are poorly maintained. The diesel lump is torquey and will spin the wheels quite happily so they need to grip well in the wet but not be so soft that I've shredded them in a few months, will also need to stop me when I'm playing chicken with the Deer in Ashdown Forest.

Tyres are 225/45/17, Speed rating Y and load index of 91 although thinking of going for 94 if people think the stronger side walls might cope with the pot holes better.

Currently considering the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx RT as there is a good deal on Black Circles at the moment, trying to avoid Mail Order as there is no one around to receive them at home and I can't have them delivered to work any more.

my hankooks are very good in all weathers. Wear rate seems reasonable

Red Baron 26-01-2015 09:43 PM

Is that the Ventus V12 Evo 2?

Scott.T 26-01-2015 09:53 PM

Sound like a job for Michelin as they wear well.
Harder side wall isn't going to be forgiving of potholes.

Tyre leader can drop them at your preferred fitting centre from their list.

yep.

The Michelins on the rear have perished round the side walls, I've seen that before with them on my old Nissan. Also need them done this weekend so no guarantees they'd have them in time, slightly concerned that they list the wheel and tyre place on The Ridge that isn't there any more.

You cant beat a good old tyre debate

Just my opinion for what its worth..

The Goodyear Eagle F1s are one of the few tyres 'A' rated for wet roads.

I have both F1s and V12s the V12s are good but the F1s are better..

Just my advice, have you spoke to Mayhew on here? If not I would recommend him for tyres and fitting mate as many on here I'm sure would,

I'll start a post about oil tomorrow, not had one of those for a few months :)

Wouldn't have asked about the Scoob, wear isn't an issue as they'll rot before I've done enough miles to wear them out :)

I've got P Zero's on the legacy and they are excellent.

If you want good all round grip, particularly in the wet, you could do worse than Uniroyal Rainsport 3s... I had them on the Scoob (Still on the wheels in the garage at the moment!!) and I've just put a pair on the front of my Zafira. They have completely changed the car, so much better to drive compared to the hedgehunters that were on there before and only £40/£50 quid each... Might be a bit more for 17s but worth a look.

£100 a corner fitted for the Uniroyals, went for a set of 4 Hancooks in the end as got a good price, currently have 2 odd Michelins, one of which has a date mark of 2007, a Firestone and a very lumpy Matador, cant wait to see the back of all of them.

Where did you get them from in the end .

Red Baron 27-01-2015 06:42 PM

Black Circles, could have done it cheaper with a friendly fitter and home delivery but not practical for me. 225/45/17 for £79 each fitted.

Wow... Didn't pay anywhere near that for 18s on the Scoob, amazing how different sizes/profiles vary in price!... Must admit I did have time on my side in that I got them delivered and then sorted fitting. Anyway, glad you got something sorted 8-)

A bit late now but I'm with Ian on the F1s. Best tyre I've had in the wet and up there in the dry too. Frequently the best rated all round tyre by Evo (although not in the most recent test) The only downside is that they can be expensive in some sizes.
Everyone has their own favourite though! ;)

Frenchie 28-01-2015 07:52 AM

Have to agree with Ian and Greg,I've had F1s for a few years and incredible in the wet.

Rdlangy1 28-01-2015 10:59 AM

had continental contact sport 5 on the mondeo last year - great performance - top rated tyre on which, but only last 9,000 miles! replaced them Tuesday just gone for Dunlop Sportmaxxx RT - which also had good ratings...

Red Baron 28-09-2015 11:09 AM

Just to resurrect this one. The Hankooks have been spot on in terms of grip but I've taken them down to the wear indicators in under 15000 miles (8 months). Not sure anything else would have lasted any longer.
