Hi all as you know ive got a 1993 wrx... ive been told that you cannot get the ecu remapped? first ive heard. also been told not to change boost hoses to silicone? is this wright.

Hello! No idea about the Ecu but if memory serves me correct, there were a few that couldn't. As for the silicone hoses, I think really good quality ones are fine but avoid cheaper ones as they will close shut under load. Actually saw this happen at Surrey rolling road once.

They can't be remapped like later ones, but you can fit an ESL daughter board (Search Ebay), which then allows it to be remapped, or you can buy a replacement chip for your ECU as a cheaper alternative.
I am using an Ecilpse Performance chip in my ECU and have been running it for something like 2yrs now. it allows me to run on 97ron fuel, raises boost to 1.1 bar.
the chip is best used with other supporting mods like uprated fuel pump, bigger exhaust etc.
The chip is about £50 whereas the daughter board is more, but allows a map specific to your car with your mods

am running a z4 ecu. is this ok to remap?

with a daughter board, I believe so. SIlverSurfer will know for sure

The z4 is the best firmware version I.e running code and almost the best maps. Only superseded by the slightly better 6k from the sti 2. Which was the same map used in UK prodrive cars.
Once chipped using the spare slot on the motherboard (which was used to get around a group n rally regulation) the ecu fully takes on the guise of the chip.
However this is old technology and a crude/slow way of remapping (hence why many tuners will tell you it can't be done). It is effective but not as good as a car specific remap as the tolerance are wide to cater for minor vehicle variation.
Great value for money though if from a reputable source ;)

Esl provide a daughter board that fits into the same location as the chip but the intelligence on this brings the ecu into the 21st century and allows laptop driven bespoke mapping but retaining all the standard ecu safety features. But at a cost of £350 + mapping fee's.

Eclipse performance use a map developed by someone else. Maybe without their knowledge !!!!!
I have the eclipse map image from 2 different sources many years apart.
It may run ok but the load values used on some graph axis are inconsistent and on some instances the load generated may cause mapping to to hit full scale and therefore have no further adjustment

if its Eclipse in Sunderland then AFAIK then they have gone bust and most likely was a third party provider

mine was bought used off someone on another forum so it wasnt new. he ran it for 2yrs on his RA and I have run it for 2yrs so far with no problems so i must have been lucky and got a good one. When I bought it, i'm sure the Eclipse Performance web site was running at the time, but now appears to have disappeared.

The chips are still available on ebay, so probably is 3rd party now like you said, or old stock being sold by someone that worked there before.
