Brighton speed trials 2013

Was looking at going this Saturday but just checked and it's cancelled due to safety concerns after last years fatality:doubledown:

Just a heads up if others were thinking of going

That is a shame :( Found this on The Argus:

Quote:

The historic Brighton Speed Trials have been cancelled this year following a fatality during last year’s event.

Representatives from the Brighton and Hove Motor Club, which organises the annual event on Madeira Drive, met Brighton and Hove City Council last week to discuss the future of the trials.

Both parties agreed it would be unwise to host the speed trials until the circumstances that led up to last year’s incident were fully understood and the coroner had reported her findings.
Whilst it was a tragic accident, everyone enters an event like this knowing that motorsport is dangerous. I hope the Speed Trials haven't run for the last time in today's health & safety society.....

That was announced ages ago (May). Why it's taking so long for the inquest to be completed I don't know. Would have been this Saturday coming, gutted as I really enjoy it. Lot's of people suspect it's the Green Party.

I wonder if part of the problem is public safety? The competitors, officials and people who've paid to get in are warned of the dangers and covered by the motor club's liability insurance, but the people watching from elsewhere, who haven't paid to get in, aren't covered.

In previous years, when my dad has marshalled down there, he's had to move people off the beach side of the road who've somehow got into the restricted area because they'd be right in the line of fire if something went wrong. I know of officials involved in Motocross who've had injured parties try to claim against them personally - no organiser wants to lost their house because some idiot stood in the wrong place and got hurt!

Unfortunately it seems there's too much at stake these days for anybody involved in historic (but slightly less than perfect from a H&S point of view) events!

Thing is its ran for over 100 years and passed without incident far more often than not. They stopped people gathering on the balcony as it's 'unsafe' yet deem it safe the other 364 days of the year?! For me it's because it goes against everything the Green Party stand for.

Your points are all perfectly valid though and may well play a part unfortunately.

Its a shame. I saw that there is the Ace Cafe reunion this weekend now, though I undetstand is more a bike thing than cars.

ace cafe used to be on sunday, the day after speed trials.

shame about speed trials as i have been going most years for the last 25 years. unfortunatly someone i knew who participated deceased just after last years, so this year is a bit of a downer.

All down to the Green Party in my opinion, have been trying to get it stopped for a while now can't see it being run again!

Really hope you are wrong.

Sadly, I agree. On the plus side, they'll hopefully be out next election :-)
