Big thanks to C.J.

Got the new clutch and fly fitted today, feels a lot lighter than the old one but slightly 'grabbier'.

Cheers for fitting it Chris!:worthy:

Bit longer than an hour but lots of very tight bolts! I got there at half 9 and was on the way home by 5, without the seized bolts and my cars dodgy hydraulics I reckon we could have been done by half 2/3

C. J. 06-04-2013 07:24 PM

No probs
Tim buy SMD a torque wrench !

C. J. 06-04-2013 07:48 PM

Too say he over tightens bolts is a understatement ;)

Hongkongfooi 06-04-2013 08:47 PM

Oh I see

Broadside Brenda 08-04-2013 01:12 PM

Hi Chris

Sorry to hear you had problems, just out of intrest what did we over tighten?

C. J. 08-04-2013 06:41 PM

turbo , gearbox to engine had to use 2ft of leverage

Broadside Brenda 09-04-2013 09:31 AM

We are always looking to improve our service here so any feed back, positive or negative is appriceated.
In our deffece any nuts or bolts on a turbo/exhust system are well known for being problematic or sezied when removeing due to the extreeam heat cycles they incur, in some cases we have seen turbo to downpipe nuts and bolts almost weld themselves together and pull the thread off of the bolts. We have not carried out any work on the exhaust system on that car since August 2011 so this is quite likely.
As for the gearbox to engine bolts I can only say that the bolts would have been greased to prevent seizeing and when reinstalled, tightend with a 3/8 rachet (not a 2ft bar).

Thanks Brent @ SMD

C. J. 09-04-2013 10:37 AM

Taken many a gearbox out and never had an issue of bolts being as tight as time .fitted close to 60 or 70 turbos and had some b******s which this was one off which is part of subaru's . But never had to us a 2' bar to take the gugen pin cover off .
Maybe I'm getting old Brent !

The 10mm Allan bolt are always a sod to get out!! Regardless of how long they been in there an how tight they were done!

I did a clutch on gtiteen car a few weeks later the box went bang I snapped my snap on 10mm 3/8 drive Allan key trying to undo the pivot plug to witch I defo didn't do that tight!!!
I always use plenty of lube on the pivot arm/pin and on the thread of the bung.

Top bell housing bolts always seem to pick up, there was a time I was doing 3/4 clutchs/boxes a week at least 1 that we to have issues with, I spose you must be very lucky if you've never had issuses before!

SpecB 09-04-2013 12:14 PM

Looking at my records the downpipe had been off since it was last at SMD.

All the gearbox bolts were removed without using heat or penetrating fluids etc. on a driveway using std tools so I assume could easily have worked tight. And it was bloody cold!

To be sure of fairness to all parties, I have had no issues with any of the work done on my car by SMD nor the clutch swap which was performed by C.J. at the weekend, I would still reccomend both to anybody who asked.

I actually look forward to my 'day out' to SMD, top service by top top blokes.

Lucky 10-04-2013 10:53 AM

I miss them lol. Another good reason to get a scoob. They do still service my business partners 4wd metro... sorry range rover and at about half the price that Land rover want.

Harvey05, that made me chuckle!
