V-Power Ron Rating
 

There seems to be some debate about whether V-Power is 98 or 99 RON rated.

I have found the below information which should clarify this.

I have left the Germany bit on there for the ringers to look at, although we usually fill up with either 98 + octane boost or BP102 in Adenau.

V-Power petrol

Petrol or gasoline is assessed, categorised and sold by an octane rating. Generally, in most areas of the world, the Research Octane Number (RON) is used, but in North America, the Anti-Knock Index (AKI) is used. Conventional 'standard' "Premium Unleaded" petrol in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia has an octane rating of 95 RON, and in North America it is AKI/RdON/PON 91-93 (RON 96–98). However, higher octane "Super Unleaded" - often formulated with higher quality additives, is usually set at around 98 RON in mainland Europe; but this can vary by market. Most oil/petroleum companies now 'market' their own Super Unleaded petrols under a unique name - and the current name for Shell Super Unleaded fuel is "V-Power". Like most Super Unleaded petrols, V-Power also contains higher concentrations of detergents and other additives to help clean the engine and smooth its operation.

In the United Kingdom and Denmark (where Super Unleaded must be a minimum of 97 RON), V-Power has a rating of 99 RON (whereas V-Powers' predecessor Shell Optimax was rated at 98 RON). There is one other 99 RON fuel available in the UK, namely Tesco MOMENTUM99.


In Germany, all Shell stations offer two varieties of petrol V-Power: Super V-Power, rated at 95 RON, and V-Power Racing 100, rated at 100 RON

I only ever run on V-Power or T99 (if no V-power to be had)

Full of T99 ready for Saturday because I didn't want any trouble getting V-power and seemed stupid to drive around the world to find a Shell with v-power, when T99 was available 5 minutes away:ok:

Hopefuly there will be a Shell on the way home with some v-power to top up with....... either way, it will be V-power or T99:ok:

it even says 99ron on the v-power pumps over here.

although now i'm mapped to 97 ron i dont have to worry any more !!!

I've still never tried T99.

Our nearest is probably where you are Ron, or Horsham.

So, I am now going to fill up with Total Excellium (97) and an octane boost. :drive:

I know mate, but there are people who still say this is not the case :angst:

they should be made to ride a unicycle round the ring while smothered in honey on an especialy hot day when there are lots of bee's around till they learn how to read then !!! lol

Can't remember where I read it:oops: but IIRC all fuels have to pass the level thats displayed! So say a 95ron fuel will give 95.5 - 97ron, this probably goes for all the fuels.... 95 / 97 and 99.

I would 'guess' that v-power although marketed as 99 here and 100 overseas, is the same fuel!! I would imagine that to surpass the required 'minimum' labelling as 99 means the fuel passess the minimum requirement and meets the rules for UK fuel selling? Just a guess though.

also, IIRC adding the same 'additive' to different fuels gives different results! the highest 'RON' gains obtained from adding to lower graded fuels. You get ahigher RON when adding to 95 than you would mixing the same quantities with say 97?

I expect someone like Scott or Simon will know for sure but I believe adding octane booster to higher grade fuels can also degrade the fuel your adding to? something to do with burn temps or similar. Thinking that the higher rated fuels have additive already included to raise values.

Isn't it believed 'safer' to run on lower graded fuel 'off' boost, than to run with a fuel and octane booster? If this is the case, I would only use octane booster as a temp to get you to a 99 store:ok:

I thinks that's probably a wise call, I don't batter around that much really anyhow, but it is worth taking care.

It'll be interesting to see what the knock sensor does with 97 + OB.

Iv'e had to start using momentum 99 (£1.45 ltr) as still no shell over here in kent. :fool:

Mate tell me about it, i went to all 3 shell garages in Maidstone on sunday then the SHell on Rochester Road in gravesend..... all out of V-power!

I gave up in the end and went home before i ran out!

Thats my local garage the one on Rochester Road Gravesend as i live just up the top of Thong lane :cath:, I turned around after a few attempts too but then the old light bulb above the head lit up and i rolled very slowly over to snodland / larkfield's big tesco and got momentum there.

I'm running momentum (mapped on V-Power) at the moment - Just recently started giving the car a bit more boost and have slowly from gentle off boost moved to WOT runs, Syvecs has not shown any knock (still not got my knock gauge fitted) and the logs show nothing untowards.

I use t99 a lot more then v power, as is only 2 mins from office.
Ks3 and max iam would indicate its fine.

Octane boosters can turn your plugs Orange, but not sure what the long term effect is.

The number number shown is the AKI / PON (anti-knock index / pump octane number)

Its the average figure between RON (research octane number) and MON (motor octane number)

guess i'll be taking a drive to sidcup tonight as i need to fill up for work thsi weekend.

Just filled up with v-power at Shooters hill, Welling also had it so it looks like its getting back to normal until some stupid MP decides to open there mouth again

Filled up at Northfleet last night seems they have all had a delivery now the attendent (we always have a chat as he see me so much lol) said there was a problem at the refinery that only effected teh vpower. dont know what the problem was thou.

I think the problem is called "profiteering"...

From not being able to sell fuel that we all use???

You only have x amount of tankers able to carry the fuel. you have panic buying and stations are running out of fuel. You know every car will use your "fuel saving" fuels and they have the mental thought that they will last longer per tank, so you fill all of your tankers with the standard fuel so that at least your filling stations are full with something.

You tell drivers etc there is an issue with a pump, so that they don't question why they aren't supposed to fill it up anyway.

lol, its just i payed £1.45 a litre for momentum 99 down in snodland and i expected the V-power to be more when it came back in stock. Prices still not great though. :sadnod:
